California's Gold Rush History! |
|
Peppermint Creek Carriage Company offers educational field trips in conjunction with the Knights Ferry Army Corps of Engineers. On the banks of the Stanislaus River students of all ages will experience the way of life that settled the west. Your class will travel through historic downtown Knights Ferry, one of the gateway towns to the "motherlode" of California's Gold Rush. Your group will learn about the history and use of these magnificent Belgian Draft Horses. Your students will travel, by horse-drawn wagon, through the longest covered bridge west of the Mississippi River and learn about the forces that shaped early California history. Earlene Smith, owner of Peppermint Creek Carriage Company, is an experienced educator and will tailor her presentation appropriately to the age of the class. |
| Our Belgian Draft Horses are very gentle, personable, and "kid safe". Jesse and Kyle are strong, willing partners of a life-long team. They are closely related and their mothers worked together, in harness, to teach these "gentle giants" their good manners. Children will learn how these horses helped settle the West. We will demonstrate that working horses are handled with care and consideration for their well-being and comfort. | ![]() |
| Jesse and Kyle wait patiently next to the ruins of the Knights Ferry flour mill while school children board the wagon. | |
